last night i watched the surrogate and it was a charming story based on the life of mark o’brian (played by john hawkes), a poet who has polio. unlike the biopic based on o’brian’s life (breathing lessons) this film focuses on o’brian hiring a sex surrogate (helen hunt) to take his virginity. with self-deprecating humor and lightness unexpected from a character who spends almost all of his day strapped in an iron lung, hawkes brings us into the joys, anxieties, fears, sweetness, and wonder of pleasure through a dis/abled body. i laughed more during this drama than i do most comedies. i certainly think this film is to sundance what pariah was last year.
